Fire crews arrived to find the people had managed to get outside as the blaze took hold.

A 999 call alerted crews to the house in Ednam Road, in the Goldthorn Hill area of Wolverhampton.

No one was injured said West Midlands Fire Service.

Eight firefighters arrived within three minutes of the call at around 9.20am to tackle the blaze on the first floor.

A spokesman from West Midlands Fire Service said: "Firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the fire, and the gas and electricity to the property was isolated."

Crews also used thermal imaging cameras to check whether the flames had reached the roof and loft but they found the fire had been contained.

They remained at the scene through the morning to check for any any potential spots were the fire could re-ignite and to dampen down the debris.

West Midlands Fire Service had it will investigate the cause of the blaze.

Blackened windows outside showed how smoke built up from the flames.
