Baswich Lane will be closed to vehicles from 1pm on Saturdays to 6am on Mondays from February 16 to March 30 as Network Rail carries out work on the surface of a bridge.

Work will also be carried out on the track each Saturday overnight from January 5 to March 30 and some weekdays which could affect neighbours.

The work was initially due to be carried out last January but it was delayed by a year so Network Rail could discuss it with local businesses it will affect.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “This vital maintenance work at Baswich Lane bridge in Stafford was originally scheduled for January 2018, but Network Rail chose to delay the project so we could have detailed discussions with nearby businesses.

“To ensure the work causes minimal impact to the Tilcon Avenue industrial estate, road closures will only happen when it isn’t open - from 1pm on Saturday to early each Monday morning, with a diversionary route signposted during those hours. We have also reduced the scope of our project to reduce the time it takes.

“Without the work, eventually it would mean the complete rebuilding of the structure, causing much disruption in the area. This much needed maintenance to masonry below the bridge and waterproofing work on the road surface will ensure a reliable road crossing of the railway lines for many years to come.

“We thank all of the businesses for their input into the planning of this important work, and for their patience while the upgrade to Baswich Lane bridge takes place between January and March 2019.”

A letter from Network Rail sent to residents says the company understands the 'inconvenience and disruption' the work may cause.

It says: "Safety is our priority and for this reason work of this nature must be carried out while trains are not running. Under our licence conditions we are contractually obliged to work, whenever possible, at times that cause the least disruption to train services.

"Unfortunately, this means carrying out a lot of our improvements during the night and at weekends.

"We understand the inconvenience and disruption our work may cause. The type of equipment and machinery we use does mean some disturbance is unavoidable, but we will make every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise.

"All staff and contractors are briefing on working responsibly in the local community. We expect staff to be considerate, polite and courteous at all times."
