The base in Meadow View Wharf, off Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, has treated people with multiple sclerosis in the city for 30 years.

The new wheelchair-friendly decking area will allow the centre’s users to enjoy its canalside location while staying safe.

Centre Manager, Susan Husband, said: “The area we have outside needed making safe so that that our patients can go out and enjoy the view of the canal.

“We have been really keen to get more people outside as it is such a lovely, lovely location.

“This will now enables us to keep patients safe while enjoying the environment.”

The improvement project was initially given impetus from a £20,000 donation received via Wolverhampton-based law firm Underhill Langley & Wright.

The money had been left for good causes by landowner Peter Vernon who died in 2012.

This was supported by smaller donations given by supporters of the therapy centre.

And finally there was £12,000 donated by Unite union members who had worked at the city’s iconic Goodyear factory which closed it gates for the final time earlier this year.

An extra £5,000 from Unite members has been used on other work around the centre.

Cyril Barrett, chairman of Unite the union Goodyear branch, said: “Little did we know that one of our own members had got MS and was being treated at the centre.

“It is very touching to know people who are being helped there.

“This is another part of us creating a living legacy in this city for the former Goodyear workers.”
