Further five coronavirus deaths confirmed at region's hospitals

Five more coronavirus deaths have been confirmed in the Black Country and Birmingham.

The deaths announced on Monday mean 7,486 people have now died with the virus in the region's hospitals.

No new deaths were announced in Staffordshire on Monday.

Alongside this, a further 1,380 people have died in the region’s care homes after contracting coronavirus.

The UK-wide death toll, which unlike NHS data only includes deaths within 28 days of a positive test, increased by 17 to 126,172 on Monday.

And the total number of people to have received their first dose of the vaccine stood at 27,997,976, with 2,281,384 having also had their second dose.

Across the region

Two deaths were announced at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, taking the total to 1,155.

One death was confirmed at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross Hospital, where the death toll is now 793.

A further death was reported at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the death toll now stands at 714.

And one death was recorded at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth Hospital as well as Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope hospitals, where the death toll increased to 2,575.

No new deaths were announced at either the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, or the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs Stoke and Stafford hospitals, where the totals remain 723 and 1,365 respectively.
