Child who died in Staffordshire woodland in 'unexplained' circumstances was three-month-old girl, say police

Staffordshire Police is treating the girl’s death as “unexplained” but said it was an “isolated incident”

Investigations are continuing near a Staffordshire village after the death of a three-month-old girl in “unexplained” circumstances.

Staffordshire Police officers attended land near Strawberry Lane in Great Wyrley on Saturday morning (September 5) alongside ambulance and air ambulance crews after reports of a child in cardiac arrest.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics from West Midlands Police and the Midlands Air Ambulance, the girl was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Staffordshire Police said the child’s family are understood to have been camping in the area.

The force said officers were still in the area on Sunday carrying out enquiries into what happened and to provide reassurance to the local community.

Detective Inspector Katie Gregory said: “While the investigation remains at an early stage, this is an isolated incident and we understand that the child’s family was camping in the area.

“The death is being treated as unexplained at this time.”
