Ex-Reform UK councillor launches petition for police hub in Staffordshire town

The petition has more than 350 signatures so far.

A former Reform UK councillor, who resigned last week, has launched a petition calling for a police hub in Tamworth town centre.

Dylan Powis, who represents Bolehall, said that ‘residents deserve to have accessible policing’.

Councillor Powis took to social media at the end of October to announce his resignation from the Reform party.

He was first elected in May this year but now says ongoing disagreements with the national party are behind the decision, however, remains committed to serving the people of Tamworth.

Now he has started a petition, signed by more than 350 people calling on Staffordshire Police and the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to establish a publicly accessible police station or police hub in Tamworth town centre.

The petition states: “Tamworth deserves accessible, visible and community-focused policing. This is an issue I campaigned on during the local elections. I believe Tamworth deserves a visible and accessible police presence in its town centre, and I intend to continue pursuing that commitment.

“While Staffordshire Police maintains a local policing presence in the town, residents should have a convenient place in the town centre where they can walk in, speak to a police officer and raise concerns. We believe a dedicated police hub would help rebuild the connection between the police and the communities they serve.”

The police station’s front office closed in 2019 as part of a transformation to better serve its communities.

More recently the Spinning Lane site obtained planning permission in 2024 to turn the building into 54 flats.

The four-storey building in Tamworth, built in 1975, was recently up for auction. Auctioneers SDL Property Auctions valued the property at £1.8 million.

However, before the sale the lot was postponed. The site now falls within the council’s wider regeneration plans for Gungate.

The petition can be signed here.
