St Giles Hospice invites families to remember loved ones with Light up a Life

The Christmas appeal offers people the chance to dedicate a light and attend remembrance services across Staffordshire and the West Midlands

St Giles Hospice is inviting the local community to ‘Light up a Life’ this Christmas, to remember loved ones who are no longer with us and reflect on memories of them.

The initiative allows people to dedicate a light on the hospice’s virtual Christmas tree, write a message for the Book of Memories, and attend one of the charity’s Light up a Life services this festive season.

Dedications made before midnight on Monday 16th November will include loved ones’ names in the Book of Memories, which will be available to view throughout at various service locations.

Each dedication helps raise vital funds for local people, and their loved ones, living with a terminal illness.

Six services will take place across Staffordshire and the West Midlands, offering a chance to reflect, remember, and celebrate the lives of those who have died.

Open to all, the services are designed for anyone wishing to remember someone who has died, regardless of whether they had a connection to the hospice.

The full schedule is:

  • Burton: St Modwen’s Church, Sunday, November 29 - 6pm
  • Lichfield: Lichfield Cathedral, Tuesday, December 1 - 7pm
  • Tamworth: St Editha’s Church, Saturday, December 5 - 6pm
  • Cannock: St Lukes Church, Sunday, December, 6  - 6pm
  • Barton Under Needwood: St James’ Church, Wednesday, December 9 - 6pm
  • Whittington: St Giles Hospice, Sunday, December 13 - 4pm

Abigail Gilbert will be dedicating a light in memory of her mum, Sandra, who was cared for by St Giles Hospice.

She said: “One of the most precious memories we have from being at the hospice is fulfilling my daughter, Taylor’s wish to have a takeaway with her Nanny while watching Britain’s Got Talent. We were able to do this in the new overnight stay suite where Mum was able to join us in her bed so we could all spend that special evening together.

Despite everything we were going through, the staff made sure Taylor could still be Mum’s grandchild. It’s a memory we’ll treasure forever.”

Speaking about Light up a Life, Abigail said: “This year we would love you to join us and make a Light up a Life dedication. My daughter Taylor and I will be attending one of Light up a Life remembrance services together – it feels like the perfect way to remember someone during the festive period, surrounded by other families who have experienced something similar to us.”
