Express & Star journalist Roger Clift died this week at the age of 59 after a year-long cancer battle.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues who described his fun-loving nature and complete professionalism.

Born in Middlesex in 1949, Roger formed his own R 'n' B band 'Steep Clift' when he left school until his mother wrote to the Middlesex Chronicle saying her son was "good at essays" – and a life in newspapers beckoned.

His four decades in the industry saw him work at the Middlesex Chronicle, the Slough and Hounslow Evening Mail, and then, in Devon, at the Sunday Independent and Western Evening Herald.

He went on to become deputy editor of the Sentinel in Stoke-on-Trent, before joining the Shropshire Star and then the Express & Star as a sub-editor.

Continuing his life-long passion for soul and R 'n' B music, he played keyboards in the band Commitments Too.

He married Jacky in 1972 and they had three children: Ramona and George, and James, who died aged 13. Roger and Jacky separated in 1996.

Roger's second partner was Sara Benjamin, who died in 2003. After her death, Roger and the band raised thousands of pounds for charity MIND.

Friend and colleague Phil Gillam said: "Roger was a big personality with a big heart. But behind the fun and the jokes was a thoughtful man who cared deeply about people. We will miss him."

Express & Star chief sub-editor Diane Davies said: "Roger was a hard working, dedicated journalist who brought a wealth of experience but also a great deal of wit and laughter to the office.

"He won the hearts and respect of everyone who met him."

The funeral is at Bradwell Crematorium, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on Friday, March 20, at 11am.
