Jobs will be slashed by Dudley Council in the next financial year as plans to cut £30million from budgets and limit council tax rises were unveiled today.

A three-year programme of savings has been drawn up aiming to keep rises in taxpayers' bills to less than two per cent. Bosses say they want to ease the financial burden on residents struggling amid the recession.

They confirmed bills would be trimmed by axing "dozens" of jobs but would not commit to firm figures.

Cash will first be saved by discontinuing "back office" posts but there will also be "limited" voluntary redundancies, interim director of finance Bill Baker said.

Provisional figures highlight savings of £7million next year, £12million in 2011/12 and £14million in 2012/13.

A shake-up of services for the elderly is expected to save £6million over three years while cutting staff in urban environment and adult, community and housing departments will shrink bills by more than £5million.

Positions will also go in finance; law, property and human resources and children's services but no figure has been set.
