Around 500 people packed into the venue to cheer on the competitors in the International Open Pro-Am Oscar Awards.

There had been fears bodybuilding contests would be outlawed at the hall after fake tan was left smeared on walls and seats following a show last year.

But organiser Jim Charles was today planning to return to the venue to clean it up after yesterday's competition. "We have been making that sort of mess for 50 years," he said. "I will always clean up any mess we leave." The bodybuilders, who had travelled from across the Midlands and further afield, battled it out in categories ranging from the Junior Under-21s to the Over-50s Masters.

Prizes were presented by Dudley mayor Ray Burston and Councillor Adrian Turner.

The top Pro-Am Oscar award went to Gary Lister of Donaster, a contender for the next Mr Universe contest who presented the prize back to Mr Charles.

The event was an anniversary celebration for Mr Charles who has been helping men and women get into shape at Jim's Gym in Lye for 50 years said he was "overwhelmed".
