Staffordshire pet trader who made an estimated £250,000 selling exotic breeds illegally pleads guilty to multiple charges
A Staffordshire pet trader who made an estimated £250,000 illegally has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and selling exotic birds and tortoises.
Robert Gillan, of Upper Cross Street, Rugeley, was due to stand trial at Stafford Crown Court yesterday (Monday) but instead pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
Recorder of Staffordshire Judge Avil Muherjee KC issued a bench warrant for Gillan last Tuesday when the 41-year-old failed to turn up for a pre-trial hearing. Gillan handed himself in on Friday.
Cannock Chase District Council prosecuted Gillan for allegedly making more than £200,000 due to breaking laws and strict regulations concerning the selling of rare animals and birds.
Gillan runs Staffordshire Pets Ltd which has been trading since September 2021.
