When will Brewood Bridge reopen? Latest update on repair plans 9 months after closure

Motorists are still unable to use Brewood Bridge following its closure in December 2025

The Canal & River Trust is continuing to develop repairs for Brewood Bridge, but there is still no confirmed reopening of the historic crossing.

The bridge, which carries Kiddemore Green Road and High Green across the Shropshire Union Canal, has been closed to traffic since December 2025 after significant structural damage was discovered.

In its latest available update, the Canal & River Trust said it was working with Staffordshire County Council to finalise repair plans.

When contacted by the Express & Star, Staffordshire County Council said: “ The works are being done by the Canal and RiverTrust as it is their bridge, so you’d need to get the latest update from them.”

Last month, the Trust indicated that work could begin within the coming weeks.

The Express & Star has contacted the Trust for comment as of October 26.

The historic bridge dates back to 1830 and provides an important route for people travelling into Brewood.

Its closure followed the discovery of extensive damage to the supporting bridge walls and the adjoining road surface. Problems involving a Severn Trent water pipe were also identified, with the water company subsequently repairing the pipe.

Contractors Kier carried out trial holes in September to locate underground services and gather further information about the structure.

Additional investigations were planned to help engineers assess ground conditions and develop a suitable repair design. The findings will inform the detailed design and approval process before a construction programme can be agreed with Staffordshire County Council.

The Canal & River Trust is responsible for repairs to the bridge structure and has said the proposed work aims to restore the bridge and road to their original layout while preserving the historic character of the crossing.

Investigations into the cause of the damage have also been ongoing.

Drivers continue to face diversions

The closure means motorists cannot cross the canal at Brewood Bridge using Kiddemore Green Road and High Green, disrupting journeys between Brewood village and the surrounding area.

Drivers are advised to follow the signed diversion and allow additional time for their journeys.

The disruption has also affected access to nearby businesses and attractions, including Hockerhill Adventure Playbarn.

The playbarn remains open as usual, but visitors are being asked to approach from Bishops Wood along Kiddemore Green Road rather than travelling from Brewood village.

Visitors can view the recommended route using Google Maps.

The venue has advised customers to allow extra time for possible delays.

The closure adds approximately an 8-mile detour (or roughly 10 minutes of extra driving time) to your journey.

When will Brewood Bridge reopen?

As of 26 October 2026, no confirmed reopening date has been published in the latest available information from the Canal & River Trust.

The timing will depend on the completion of investigations, the final repair design and the necessary approvals before work can begin.

Until a programme of works is confirmed, residents, businesses and motorists face continued uncertainty over how long the closure will remain in place.
