The retailer has announced a list of 20 new locations as part of its Express convenience store opening programme, which is set to get underway in early October.

Asda says its new stores will grow its footprint in "high-footfall urban areas, residential locations, and transport hubs" – sites where the retailer has traditionally had limited presence.

The new Asda Express store is set for Hednesford Road in Heath Hayes, near Cannock, with an anticipated opening date of November this year. The firm lodged an application for a premises licence for the site with Cannock Chase District Council in December.

Asda Express stores typically stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products to suit a broad range of customer needs including ‘top up’ shops for essential items such as milk and bread, grabbing lunch on the go or cooking dinner from scratch.

The chain is in line with smaller "metro" style retail offers from other large supermarkets, such as Tesco Express, Morrisons Daily and Sainsbury's Local, designed as smaller convenience-style offerings for urban environments.

Asda launched its first Express store in 2022, before pausing the launch of standalone Express sites, it said to focus on converting the 469 stores it acquired from the Co-op and EG Group in 2022 and 2023.

Asda currently already operates an Express store in Norton Canes.

David Lepley, Chief Supply Chain Officer, commented: "We’re thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Express rollout and bring our heritage in delivering outstanding value to more locations across the UK.

"In just three years, we’ve grown from zero convenience stores to establishing a major presence in the channel, with almost 500 stores by the end of the year. This continued investment reflects the confidence we have in our convenience strategy and our focus on bringing Asda’s low prices to more local communities."
