Man, 23, charged over fatal collision in Birmingham in which a four year-old girl died

West Midlands Police have charged a man following a fatal collision in Birmingham where a four-year-old died and three others were injured.

Javonnie Tavener, 23, has been charged with causing death by careless driving, causing death whilst driving uninsured, and two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving. 

The charges come following an incident in Upper Highgate Street, Birmingham, where four-year-old Mayar Yahia died after being hit by a car on Sunday, April, 2024.

Three other people also suffered injuries that were not serious. 

Tavener appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 2, and was remanded into custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on July 30. 

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We have charged a man following a fatal collision in Upper Highgate Street, Birmingham.

"It comes after four-year-old Mayar Yahia died after being hit by a car on Sunday, 14 April, 2024. Three other people suffered injuries which were not serious.

"Tavener appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Wednesday (2 July) and was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 30 July."
