Wolves' new restaurant WV1 to close on non-match days

A bar and grill that launched in a blaze of publicity as part of Wolves' £18 million Molineux development will no longer be open to the public on non-matchdays.

WV1 Bar & Grill opened in October as part of the development of the Stan Cullis Stand, with the promise of a relaxed bar environment which would be different to normal matchday facilities.

However, three months after opening, the gastro pub-style venue has had its hours cut.

Wolves spokesman Matt Grayson said the initial opening hours were always part of a short-term pilot.

The bar and grill was previously open Wednesday to Saturday in the evenings, but will now be open to the public on match days only. It will still be available to hire during the week.

Mr Grayson said: "The pilot to open WV1 from Wednesday through to Saturday evenings, as WV1 Bar & Grill, has now come to an end. WV1 is a matchday facility, and the Bar & Grill concept was a short-term pilot, which may be repeated at some point, especially on the lead-up to Christmas.

"WV1 will still open during the week, from time to time, for special club events, as well as being available to hire for companies or private individuals."

More than 20 staff who were picked to run the bar and grill will be re-deployed to other areas of the club.

The venue had been designed to cater for non-Wolves fans alongside gold and black diehards and bosses hoped WV1 would become a fixture in Wolverhampton's nightlife.

One former employee, who did not want to be named, said she left as there was barely anything for her to do. "We were promised lots of hours but it never happened," she said.
