The final stage of the £50 million transformation of Hednesford town centre, which will create more than 600 jobs once completed, will begin next month.

The work will mean the closure of Market Street from June 6, bringing further traffic congestion to the town, but will see the re-opening of Victoria Street after four months.

Seven new shops at the Chase Gateway on Market Street are also due to be completed in early June, making way for the construction of the new Victoria Shopping Park, which will include a huge Tesco store on stilts.

Developers said today that they had made swift progress and were on track to finish the scheme ready for Christmas trading.

A 640-space car park, a further row of non-food shops, a community hall and shopping kiosk, all served by new bus stops, are also due to be built.

The shops scheme is the second and final stage in the regeneration project which has already delivered four retail units facing Rugeley Road at Chase Gateway. A community hall to replace the Aquarius ballroom will be completed later this year.
