A new Polish restaurant in Kidderminster – just a handful in the Midlands – is proving a hit with customers developing a taste for the Eastern European nation's versions of goulash and sauerkraut.

Pol Taste has opened on the site of a former garage in Comberton Hill by Greg Cichonski, aged 41, his wife Dorothy and son Peter.

The first few taster sessions have been a hit with customers and, even though at first it was mainly Polish people wanting to eat in the 40-seater restaurant, British food lovers have now been converted.

He points to cabbage dish sauerkraut and goulash, which is small pieces of beef or pork in gravy, as the main hit with many diners.

The restaurant joins a number of Polish-facilities in the town, which has a growing Polish community. These include a number of grocery shops including Casper which is next to the new restaurant.

Mr Chichonski said: "I wasn't sure how the food would go down. At first it was mainly Polish people. But that has changed and we've seen more British people in here."

Other Polish delicacies include pork chops with breadcrumbs, chicken soup and red cabbage.

Mr Chichonski has spent £50,000 refurbishing the restaurant premises, which is part of a scheme to breathe life into the former petrol station site.

The grand opening of the restaurant took place on Saturday. Kidderminster already has a weekend school at the Polish Club in the town every Saturday from 2pm to 5pm.
