Powerful Wolverhampton picture has star quality

Moody clouds swirling in the sky above, with the streets below covered in pure frost – it's Wolverhampton at its most striking.

But the powerful image overlooking Heath Town was in fact captured by Darren Friel on his humble mobile phone.

The 39 year old, from East Park, used his Sony Xperia Z1 to take the picture from Red Oak House off Wednesfield Road.

The Wolverhampton Homes concierge told how he often takes photographs when he is out during the day.

He said: "I usually take pictures of things I think look quite nice.

"I was up at Red Oak House and saw the view and thought with the clouds it would make a nice image. I have a 21-mega pixel camera on my phone and it is surprising how good the quality is.

"I am a Wolves fan and could see Molineux in the distance with the crane and wanted to get that in it.

"What I like about this photograph is how beautiful the city looks."

Mr Friel used a filter tool on his mobile phone to enhance the contrast between the clouds and the dark sky.

The father-of-five enjoys photography and has been taking snaps for several years. "I like taking little mementoes capable of changing people's perceptions," he added.

Mr Friel sent the snap in to the Express & Star's Star Witness, where we print the best of your photos online and in the paper.

The best picture each month will be rewarded with £100. From a stunning sunset to a gritty crime scene, or a potato shaped like Bruce Forsyth, we want to see it.
