His contract extension comes after he hit 73 goals for club and country last season and won the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness sees Harry Kane as the best signing they have ever made – some claim at a club whose past and present is littered with star names.

Here the Press Association looks at why Bayern were so keen to extend his deal, why Kane was ready to commit, and what the future beyond 2029 may hold.

:: Kane is already 33, but Bayern have extended his deal until the summer of 2029. Why?

Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Englishman to claim football's most prestigious individual award since Michael Owen in 2001.

Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund described Kane on Tuesday morning as the best all-round striker in the world. He is incredibly prolific – scoring 73 goals for club and country last season – but that is only half the story. He is adept at dropping deep to link up with team-mates flooding forward, unselfish in his running off the ball, key to the team’s attacking press and even willing to track back where necessary. That all-round package was key to Kane winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.

This deal is a show of faith that Bayern do not see Kane winding down – on the contrary chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen sees him as vital in a “story that is far from over”. Bayern are a club where domestic success is expected and demanded. But keeping Kane – alongside other fabulous talents such as Michael Olise – demonstrates that ambition burns bright at Bayern to bring the Champions League trophy back to Munich.

:: Why is Bayern still a good fit for Kane?

Kane has reportedly been made Europe’s best-paid player with this new deal, but there is much more to this than simply money.

Kane and his family have settled well into life in Bavaria, and it is difficult to think of another club in Europe right now he could move to where he would both play a central role and have such realistic prospects of winning the Champions League.

:: What records has he already set at Bayern, and which could he go on to break now his stay has been extended?

Kane’s numbers at Bayern are astonishing. He became the fastest player to 100 Bundesliga goals in September, reaching the landmark in just 98 appearances. For context, legendary Bayern goal machine Gerd Muller took 136 games to achieve it.

In all he has scored 156 in 161 Bayern appearances, and added a further 40 assists. Muller’s all-time Bayern scoring record of 566 was set across 15 years and looks unbeatable for Kane, but eclipsing second-placed Robert Lewandowski’s total of 344 may be a personal target Kane can aim at.

:: What about the Premier League scoring record – is this contract extension a signal we won’t see him in the English top flight again?

Kane was just 47 behind Alan Shearer’s tally of 260 when he left Tottenham for Bayern in 2023.

Just turning 36, could he come back to England in the summer of 2029 – at his beloved Spurs or elsewhere – and still do a job? Avoiding injury and managing minutes will be crucial, but do not rule it out. Kane described turning 30 as the “second half” in a 2023 interview and saw himself playing on to 38 or 39.

:: The calendar at the top level is brutal. Surely Kane cannot continue playing international football beyond the next Euros?

Kane remains determined to spearhead England’s attack at the home tournament in 2028, and the Football Association will be desperate for him to do so given his importance to the team and dearth of other ready-made options to step in.

He could potentially see it as a perfect way to bow out and extend his club career, particularly if England can go one step further than they did at the last two Euros.
