The 28-year-old defender declared he is "halfway" to signing for Wolves as he continued to undergo his medical.

Birmingham confirmed a fee had been agreed yesterday, but it is believed to be slightly under the club-record £7million Wolves paid for Steven Fletcher last summer.

The former Cardiff and Wycombe defender has agreed a long-term deal set to make him Wolves' highest paid player at around £40,000 a week.

The loose ends of the deal are being tied up but, with all parties hopeful there will be no late hitches, the club plan to formally unveil Johnson at a press conference tomorrow.

Negotiations for Johnson were resumed over the weekend, it has emerged, after Blues came down on their demands because of their financial position.

Wolves are armed with extra funds after the £1million sale of Greg Halford to Portsmouth, who sealed his three-year deal yesterday.

Next on their hitlist is a left-back, although boss McCarthy would like to bring in another central defender and they retain an interest in West Ham's Matthew Upson.

Jonathan Woodgate, who signed for Stoke yesterday, wanted £20,000-a-week plus £10,000-a-week appearance money, but Wolves declined the offer.

As for left-backs, Wolves have to weigh up whether to go toe-to-toe with Albion for Birmingham's £3million-rated Liam Ridgewell, or choose the cheaper option in Hearts' Lee Wallace, who has a year left on his contract and would cost between £1million to £1.5million.
