'Horrible' Wolves can end Kevin McDonald's FA Cup pain

Kevin McDonald is hoping to improve his 'tragic' FA Cup record with a Wolves team he says have become 'horrible' to play against.

The Scottish midfielder, formerly of Burnley and Sheffield United, says he's barely won a game in the famous old competition.

But with confidence high after three successive wins, the 27-year-old says Wolves go to Upton Park hopeful of causing an upset, not just for a day out.

"Obviously we are up against some of the best players in the Premier League but we want to do well and we will all be buzzing to play there," he said.

"It will be a great experience for everyone but we are going there with the aim of trying to get something.

"We feel with the way we have played recently that we can go there and cause an upset.

"At the end of the day, every player in the Championship wants to play in the Premier League and this is a great test for us to see where we are at, both individually and as a team.

"We will go there and give us our best shot."

Victories over Reading, Charlton and Brighton have dramatically improved Wolves' immediate outlook.

A team meeting after the Sheffield Wednesday defeat just before Christmas resulted in a change of tack, with Wolves going ultra defensive in a bid to start keeping clean sheets, a tactic that has had a 100 per cent success rate so far.

McDonald said of the changes: "We changed our style of play over the last three games which was needed to get some points on the board.

"And we have changed our mentality a little bit as well.

"We are high on confidence now after turning things around and keeping three clean sheets, after letting in seven goals in the previous two games.

"We made ourselves a horrible team to play against and hard to break down.

"It needed a lot of concentration, but we all did that on our own individual jobs for 95 minutes and in some cases they were different jobs, as it was with me.

"We did what we needed to do to win the games and hopefully we can continue with that form.

"Now we go to West Ham to try and cause an upset."

Kenny Jackett's side will be backed by a 3,000-strong sell-out away following at Upton Park.

Despite some indifferent form throughout the season, McDonald said the club's supporters had stuck with them all the way.

"They have been with us throughout the whole season and we want to repay them with some good performances and to keep going up the table," he added.

As for the midfielder's FA Cup record? The less said, the better.

"I think it has been pretty tragic to be honest with you.

"I think I have maybe got past the third round once.

"I've done okay in the League Cup but can't think of much success in the FA Cup.

"You definitely want to be involved in a Cup run and hopefully this is the start, although we know we have been given a tough draw.

"It will be a good experience for the lads and for the fans and a great day hopefully ended with coming back with the right result."
