Reds fans were briefly in dreamland as they looked to seal the Premier League title after taking an early lead against Nuno Espirito Santo's side, while Manchester City fell behind at Brighton.

But City came back to win convincingly at the Amex, meaning they retained the crown and Liverpool's 2-0 victory against Wolves counted for nothing.

The Anfield crowd produced a deafening roar when news of Brighton's goal came in, but their spirits were dashed as City ending up winning 4-1.

Summing up the emotion of it all and beating Wolves via a Sadio Mane double, Klopp said: "It’s difficult to prepare a team for a situation like that, to say ‘if we score and Brighton score, stay calm’. How can you know how the team will react?

"I thought it was the equaliser of Brighton. It was going nuts. Until then we were really good.

"We scored the goal, everything was fine, but then the 1-0 for Brighton opened the door for Wolves a little bit. But then it calmed down.

"The atmosphere was not that ecstatic after something happened at Brighton which we didn’t like.

"But to win against a very strong Wolverhampton side 2-0 is very impressive, it’s really good."

The Wolves supporters then taunted the Liverpool fans as each City goal went in with a variety of chants.

Liverpool cruelly missed out despite finishing on 97 points, although they do have the Champions League final to look forward to.

On just falling short, Klopp added: "The boys pushed themselves to new levels, which I love, and that development and improvement is not finished.

"It is the first try. This team is one of the best that ever played for Liverpool; 100 per cent.

"As long as Manchester City are around with their financial power, no team will pass them easily. We need to be very close to perfection to win the Premier League as long as this is the case."

Klopp added in his programme notes about Wolves: "What a football team.

"Nuno is rightly at the top of the list where people talk about 'manager of the season' because of what he and his guys do at Wolves.

"It's not just the results – it’s how they achieve them.

"Wolves are intense. They are powerful, energetic, clever, adventurous.

"They believe in their plan and they execute it well.”
