Albion could launch a bid to take midfielder Ben Watson back to the Hawthorns this summer.
The Baggies are drawing up plans for next season's Premier League campaign and boss Roberto Di Matteo has not ruled out a bid for the Wigan player.
Watson played seven times for Albion on loan during February and March before being recalled by the Latics.
Head coach Di Matteo said: "We're in the process of starting to plan for next year and it's not a process that happens over days, it will take place over the whole summer.
"We were very pleased with Ben when he was here and we'll see what happens."
Watson will be considered in the summer along with a host of potential targets from home and abroad, but the club have placed an emphasis on Premier League experience.
That could open the way for a contract offer to Steven Reid, who has impressed during his ongoing loan spell and looks set to be released by Blackburn this summer.
The head coach must also decide on the futures of Robert Koren and Gabriel Tamas, both of whom have ended the season strongly.
Koren's contract expires in June but the Baggies have an option to extend it by a year, while there is also a deal in place to sign loanee Tamas for £800,000 from Auxerre should they activate it.
Di Matteo added: "I think we will be talking now over the next few weeks and months. We will be talking over what sort of team we want to have for next year, and that's not a decision we will make today.
"Tamas has been a very good player for us since he came here and that's why he has played all the games. He has been an example of a professional.
"He is one of the first players in on the training pitch and he has been very good."
