Mowbray so glad he's got Fortune

Albion manager Tony Mowbray today revealed how his signing of Marc-Antoine Fortuné ended a two-year pursuit of the French striker.

Mowbray saw his new loan signing mark his Baggies debut with a goal in the 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

And the Albion boss then told how the arrival of the 6ft targetman had ended a long chase for his signature.

Mowbray said: "I saw him two years ago when I was looking for players for Hibs.

"I was actually watching another player but I saw Fortuné play. I've seen him live twice and our own scouting system has watched him three or four times this year and all the reports have been positive.

"Then, when the opportunity came, we got him here. We did try to bring him in during the summer window but it didn't quite happen."

And Mowbray believes the 27-year-old will be well suited to the Baggies team despite a modest scoring record during his career in France.

"Everybody sees different things in players," said Mowbray. "He hasn't got the greatest scoring record and yet when he was at Utrecht he scored for fun.

"I think Nancy have been playing one up front and the French league is slower than here. To be fair, it's a bit like chess most of the time and it probably is hard to score.

"People questioned Marc-Antoine Fortuné's goalsrecord . "Yet on Saturday we could see the benefits of a centre-forward who has got awareness."
