Former West Brom boss rushed to hospital after stroke
The Spaniard succeeded Steve Clarke early in 2014.
Former Albion boss Pepe Mel has undergone surgery after being rushed to hospital over the weekend.
It is reported the 63-year-old had a successful emergency operation in his homeland of Spain after suffering from a stroke.
Mel, whose time in charge of the Baggies spanned just five months in 2014, has remained in intensive care in Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville.
The Spaniard is currently out of work after leaving his last club, Moroccan outfit IR Tangier, in March after just seven games.
Albion have joined several other of Mel’s former clubs by wishing the former manager well.
The Baggies wrote on social media: “Everyone at West Bromwich Albion wishes former boss Pepe Mel a speedy recovery following surgery, after suffering a stroke. We're all with you, Pepe.”
Mel was appointed at The Hawthorns in January 2014, succeeding Steve Clarke, and stayed at the helm until the end of the season despite just three wins from 17 games.
Albion finished three points above the relegation places in the Premier League and Mel was relieved of his duties one day after the end of the campaign. He was replaced that summer by Alan Irvine.
Mel has managed eight clubs in the 12 years since, six have been from his homeland as well as spells in Greece and Morocco.
The former striker is revered at Real Betis, where he managed either side of a brief stint at The Hawthorns, and won promotion and achieved European football.
