Ellington is currently on the transfer list and is hoping to seal a return to Wigan this month.

Albion have so far rejected all offers from the Latics for the 25 year old, but it is clear the situation is having an affect on the forward's state of mind. And Mowbray believes it will be better for both player and club if his future is sorted now rather than let the scenario drag on for another week and a half.

Never the less, with Ellington still having two and a half years on his contract, Albion will only agree a deal that's acceptable to them.

"For me the sooner Nathan's future is sorted out the better both for the boy's own sake and for the club," said Mowbray.

"If he is going to stay he has got to get his head down as I have repeatedly said and he has got to understand he has a job to do and a responsibility.

"That is not the case if there is a deal to be done and the sooner that is done the better for everybody.

"As I sit here now I'm not sure which way it is going to go.

"We are very compassionate to his situation but the bottom line is that he is a player at our football club and when he is asked to play he has a responsibility to do his very best.

"At the weekend he was in the squad but was ill and didn't take part.

"But he won't be ill for the next four months so if he is here he has got to get on with his job."

Mowbray is renewing his efforts to sign Hibernian duo Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson in time to figure in his plans for Sunday's FA Cup derby at Molineux.

Albion had threatened to cool their interest when Hibs failed to respond to a deadline set by the Baggies. But they are now hopeful of finally clinching a deal for the duo.
