Walsall reportedly 'leading the race' for Austrian midfielder

Reports from Scotland have linked Walsall with Austrian midfielder Sprangler.

Walsall are reportedly ‘leading the race’ to sign St Johnstone midfielder Sven Sprangler.

According to Scottish outlet The Courier, Walsall have made an enquiry for Sprangler - who spent the second half of last season on loan at Newport County.

The report adds that Newport are also interested in signing the 31-year-old on a permanent basis, but that Walsall are currently the frontrunners.

Those reports have not been confirmed by the club, who are braced for a busy summer under new head coach Lee Grant.

The Austrian has one-year left on his deal at St Johnstone, although manager Simo Valakari is allegedly willing to let him to leave.

Sprangler made 18 appearances for Newport after joining them temporarily in January and won the manager’s player of the year award.

He has also previously played in the Austrian top-flight for TSV Hartberg, SV Mattersburg and Wolfsberg AC - playing for two seasons in the Europa League with the latter.

In total, Sprangler has made 79 appearances since joining St Johnstone in 2023.
