Dean Smith: Walsall FC will fight on

Dean Smith today vowed Walsall won't sit back and let their season fizzle out as they prepare to face red-hot Rotherham.

The Saddlers head to the New York Stadium tomorrow looking to end an eight-game winless run which is threatening to end their play-off challenge.

Smith remains bullish about their chances and says they are not prepared to give up without a fight, although he admits they need to start scoring more. The Saddlers have hit the net just five times during the current slump.

"We will be doing everything possible so the season doesn't fizzle out," he said. "That is what we do. We have a way we want to play and of late we have not taken our chances.

"We have got into some great positions but are not taking them. We know we are not scoring enough goals. That has been the case all season and something we have been working on all season."

The Saddlers are eighth, seven points behind sixth-placed Peterborough and Smith admits they may well need to win seven or eight of their remaining 10 games to stand a chance. But he is adamant it will only take one win to transform their fortunes.

"In our current form it doesn't look like we are going to go on that type of run but things can change very quickly," he said.

"We knew we had a really tough set of fixtures coming up but we felt we could have done better with a lot of them.

"We talk about not deserving some of the results we have had against us but that's life, you have to get on with it and there are plenty of challenges for us."

The Millers will pose the sternest of opposition, having not been beaten in 11 matches.

Steve Evans' fifth-placed side still have an outside chance of automatic promotion.

"It won't be in their nature to sit back," said Smith. "Steve's teams are full or energy and they will certainly come at us. We have to be ready for that.

"I'd like to think it will help us. Hopefully we can see spaces, create chances and go and score goals.

"We have been alright on the road this season."
