Villa are once more running the rule over Chris Samba after the veteran defender reported for their pre-season training camp in Portugal.

The 33-year-old spent the latter part of last season training with the club and is still hoping to win a deal at Villa Park.

Steve Bruce was willing to let Samba join up with the rest of the squad at their training camp in the Algarve and has not ruled out the prospect of offering the former Blackburn and QPR man a contract should he impress.

Samba, a free agent since leaving Panathinaikos in January, was linked with a move to Blues earlier in the summer.

Villa boosted their defensive ranks with the signing of John Terry earlier this week but there are question marks over the futures of both Tommy Elphick and Micah Richards, who have both struggled for game time under Bruce.
