Division One leaders upset in Staffs & West Midlands Snooker League Challenge Cup

Staffordshire & West Midlands Snooker League Division One leaders Wednesfield Cons were upset by runaway Division Four table-toppers Old Hall B in the Challenge Cup.

Wednesfield got off to a fine start as they attempted to pull back a deficit of 160 points on the handicap as Andy Price made a 46 break, but Neil Palmer kept fighting and only lost by 22 points.

Oliver Spooner won by 28 points and Ryan Hamilton by 30 points to get Wednesfield within 80 points, but James Wilde won the next frame for Old Hall by 27 points to put his side 107points in front going into the final frame.

Although Dan Ward won for Wednesfield, the hill was too steep to climb and Old Hall progressed 411-328.

In an all-Division Two clash, Bilston Sports & Social Club took on Landywood E, chasing a handicap deficit of 64 points.

Bilston got off to a flying start as breaks of 41 from Karl Taylor and 35 from Graham Cole saw them now lead by 33 points.

However, the tie switched around as Landywood's Ian Esprey and Paul Hodgkisswon by 18 and 11 points respectively as the lead was cut to four going in to thefinal frame, where Colin Kettlewell proved the hero of the hour as Landywood E emerged 355-346 victors.

In the Consolation Cup, Q Bar Juniors' Bobbie Wilson won a respotted black after their tie with Stafford Institute B ended in a tie, while Shifnal War Memorial overturned a 248-point deficit to defeat Essington C thanks in part to breaks of 48 from Keith Price and 39 from Tom Maxfield.

Poets Corner G progressed at the expense of Pennfields - with Dave Shepherd making a 40 break - while the E team edged out the B team in a Poets derby.

Ashley Wall & Tom Hurst saw off Darren Millard & Tony Walker in the Pairs Medley, while Graham Cole & Stewart Humphries also advanced.

Elsewhere, Willenhall Liberal Club defeated Landywood C in the 3x2 Challenge, while Tony Smith edged a Sedgley Ex Service derby 4-3 against Ash Barker in the second round of the Individual Championship.
