Day of events at Dudley pub raises £11,000 for regular who was taken seriously ill in Spain

Customers have rallied round after Chris ‘Chopper’ Hall was hit by a rare illness while on family holiday

A pub near Dudley raised £11,532 towards urgently needed home adaptations for a regular customer who suffered a life-changing illness while on holiday in Spain.

The Cabin in Northway, Sedgley, held a day of fundraising activities for Chris ‘Chopper’ Hall who had to to be taken to hospital in Majorca last year while on a family holiday.

It emerged that he had suffered bleeding on the brain, and spent four months in hospital on the island before being allowed to return to Britain.

He has recently been allowed to return home, after extended stays at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, New Cross in Wolverhampton and Russells Hall in Dudley.

But he needs adaptations to his home to live a comfortable life, as well as physiotherapy sessions.

The pub held an auction for shirts signed by the Wolves and West Bromwich Albion teams, a raffle, quiz night and bingo session, as well as a car wash, cake stall, tombola, as well as games and challenges during the day of events on October 17.

A crowdfunding internet page has also been set up as Chris’s supporters seek to hit a target of £15,000.

Chris’s wife Rachel said the illness had been caused by a rare type of bleed.

“Early detection is so important and life-saving as this type of bleed is often misdiagnosed,” she said.

“We are so thankful to the medical team in Spain for this. On top of Chris suffering from this rare bleed, he suffered a second bleed during the operation in Spain, and also suffered complications and infections, meningitis and numerous setbacks.

“It’s a miracle he’s alive, let alone come this far. Elements of Chris’s injury will affect him forever, and our lives have changed.”

Licensee Jemma Cooke said: “Chris is a much-loved and well-known member of our community. Chris needs alterations to his home so he can finally return safely and comfortably to his family, friends and the community that loves and misses him.”
