British astronaut and all-round great guy Tim Peake has completed the ultimate mission — playing Space Invaders IN space!

The first Briton to walk in space followed up that record-breaking feat with a game of Space Invaders with American astronaut Scott Kelly during a test of virtual reality headsets.

Major Peake, whose parents met in the West Midlands, is the first British European Space Agency astronaut to be sent to an ISS mission. He arrived on the station in December and is due to return to Earth in June.

Peake's father Nigel came to work for the Express & Star in Wolverhampton in 1964 and met his wife Angela - then a trainee midwife at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham - at a New Year's Day party in 1966. The pair lived together in Tettenhall after getting married in 1967.

According to a post on the ESA Youtube page, Kelly and Peake were testing a "new augmented-reality project" that helps make astronauts work more efficient and allows mission control to "look over their shoulder" when they found the hidden game — virtual reality Space Invaders!

Peake said the game was "just a bit of fun", but judging by his beaming smile whilst playing it was certainly more than that.

He said: "Scott and I were being attacked by aliens from all over the place and we fired our canons by squeezing our fingers together. We had to dodge their missiles hence a lot of ducking and weaving going on…much fun!"
