Important notice issued on Cannock Chase deers
Deer activity set to increase on Cannock Chase
Motorists travelling through Cannock Chase and other rural areas are being urged to take extra care as deer activity increases during the autumn rutting season.
The annual rut typically begins in late September and continues through the autumn, with male deer becoming more active as they compete for mates. Their increased movement can raise the risk of deer suddenly entering roads, particularly around dawn and dusk.
Drivers are being encouraged to:
- Slow down when travelling through rural, wooded areas.
- Stay particularly alert during the early morning and evening.
- Pay attention to deer warning signs and adjust speed accordingly.
- Remember that deer often travel in groups, meaning others may follow after one animal crosses the road.
- If a deer enters the road, brake firmly when it is safe to do so, while avoiding sudden swerving into oncoming traffic or roadside hazards.
Collisions with deer can result in significant vehicle damage and may cause serious injuries to motorists, passengers and the animals involved.
With deer activity expected to rise in the coming weeks, drivers travelling across Cannock Chase and surrounding rural routes are being asked to allow extra time for their journeys and remain vigilant.
