A scheme in Sandwell offering young people months of work experience has been welcomed by council and business bosses.

In a scheme believed to be a nationwide first, Sandwell Council will be offering the scheme to thousands of young people not in employment, education or training. Placements will last three months, with the scheme due to start next year.

Young people will be offered three-month placements with the council where they will be given specialised training.

The scheme will be made available to all young people living in Sandwell.

Council leader Councillor Darren Cooper said: "Specialised work experience for young people is now more vital than ever. These are the people who are our future.

"This will be aimed at our youngsters who for a variety of reasons have missed out on further education or university and find they cannot get employment.

"These youngsters are vital for the future of the area and must not be allowed to fall into unemployment at the first hurdle," Councillor Cooper added.

"We have spent the last 12 months looking at how we can help, and this is clearly the way forward."

Ninder Johal, president of Sandwell's Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the move, which has cross-party backing.

He said: "This will mean employees will know youngsters have got quality training. I think this is a fantastic idea and shows the council is continuing to be proactive in thinking about business.

Tory councillor Mavis Hughes said: "This will get people onto the employment ladder, rather than being on benefits."
