Police investigate two assaults outside West Midlands college after disorder forces closure

West Midlands Police confirmed two assaults are being investigated

Police are investigating two assaults outside a Birmingham sixth form college after disorder led to students being sent home.

Officers were called to Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, on Belgrave Road in Highgate, shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, November 4, following reports of disorder involving a large number of people.

West Midlands Police confirmed two assaults are being investigated, although neither victim is believed to have suffered serious injuries.

Footage of the disorder has since circulated on social media, but police said there was currently no evidence to suggest firearms or other weapons were involved.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We're aware of reports of disorder outside Joseph Chamberlain College in Birmingham this week.

"We take these reports seriously, and we continue to examine relevant pictures and videos, but no offences involving weapons have been disclosed to us."

The college sent students home following the incident, while police have increased their presence in the surrounding area in a bid to prevent further disorder.

Neighbourhood officers are working alongside college leaders and community representatives, with officers from the force's Project Guardian Taskforce also deployed.

Neighbourhood Inspector Hayley Thompson said: "We will continue to patrol the area and listen to residents' concerns, but we don't believe there is any wider risk to the public.

"Local officers are out on patrol to keep you safe and answer any questions you may have.

"We will be asking anyone who's not a student at the college to stay away from it, so that we can prevent any disorder from happening."

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police on 101 or via Live Chat, quoting log 3677 of November 4.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
