A three-year-old boy who suffered serious head injuries during an alleged assault at a Wolverhampton flat has died.

Chris Taylor, aged 23, and 18-year-old Kayley Boleyn, both from Slim Avenue in Bradley, Bilston, were appearing before Wolverhampton Magistrates Court today accused of causing or allowing the death of a child.

The boy was taken from the ground floor studio flat to New Cross Hospital on Monday before being transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital, where his life support machine was switched off on Christmas Eve.

He is believed to be related to the arrested woman but she is not his mother.

Donna Davies, aged 35, who lives nearby, left a white teddy bear outside the flat where the child was found with the message: "You didn't deserve this. RIP little one."

It is understood that the child was not known to social services in Wolverhampton and had only been living at the flat for around two weeks.

A post-mortem is soon to be take place.
