New dawn for Willenhall as huge regeneration plan recommended for approval

Huge plans to redevelop Temple Bar, Moat Street, Cemetery Road, Villiers Street and New Hall Street will be determined by Walsall Council’s planning committee at its next meeting.

Planners are set to decide on a major regeneration scheme in Willenhall’s Locksmith Quarter.

Huge plans to redevelop Temple Bar, Moat Street, Cemetery Road, Villiers Street and New Hall Street will be determined by Walsall Council’s planning committee at its next meeting.

The area, once a hive of activity for the town’s lock making industry, had fallen into dereliction and became a hotspot for arson and antisocial behaviour over recent years.

Earlier this year Walsall Council started to demolish the crumbling factories, the majority of which has now been cleared.

If the proposals are approved by the planning committee, developer Keepmoat will build 33 two-bedroom homes, 57 three-bedroom homes and 19 four-bedroom homes, each with two parking spaces.

Officers have recommended that the plans be approved subject to Section 106 agreements to include education, healthcare and open space contributions.

The Willenhall History Society believes that part of the site at Moat Street has remains of the former Leveson’s estate, one of the oldest families in Willenhall who arrived as part of William the Conqueror’s army in 1066.

The Archaeological Officer has recommended that an evaluation of the site be undertaken as soon as possible, to look for opportunities to preserve any remains.

Planners will meet on Thursday, July 30, at Walsall Council House to decide on the proposals.
