Footballer gives back to community with signed shirt
A kind donation by professional footballer is set to help raise funds for a food bank.
Former West Bromwich Albion striker Kemar Roofe, who currently plays for Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Premiership, will be giving away a signed shirt to help people living in Walsall and the surrounding area.
The shirt, which he wore against Hamilton on Remembrance weekend, will help to raise much-needed funds for Ablewell Advice Walsall and the Black Country Foodbank.
The 27-year-old said he was born in Walsall Manor Hospital and grew up in Chuckery and said the donation of the poppy shirt was a way to give back to the next generation.
He said: “I feel that I’m in a stable position to be able to do this sort of thing and it’s a good feeling to be able to give back to my community.
“I have children and a lot of my friends from there have children and I want to try and improve the area as I have so many positive memories of my time there.I used to walk past the church every day on the way to school and it’s great to help something that is a big part of the community.”
So far, £ 2,222 has been donated to the food bank fund, funding which will help the food bank at Ablewell Advice Walsall, a mission project of Central Hall Methodist Church and part of the Black Country Foodbank.
Project manager Keely Gabriel said: “We’re really honoured that Kemar wants to support us as he’s a great role model for young people in the town and recognises the need to support local people who are having a challenging time.”
Kemar will announce the winner on Thursday, December 24 on his Instagram page.
