A spacehopper showdown proved a highlight as more than 1,000 people enjoyed a day of Bank Holiday fun at Monmore Green greyhound stadium in Wolverhampton.

The event raised around £1,600 for charity and it wasn't just the racing dogs providing the entertainment. Stadium maintenance worker Andy Walker, cheered on by three-year-old daughter Maisie, won the spacehopper race which saw staff bounce for 150 yards around the track.

Younger visitors, enjoyed a bouncy castle, colouring competition and face painting. Organisers say the day raised just over £600, which was then topped up to £1,000 by the Ladbrokes Charitable Trust.

Of Andy's spacehopper victory, commercial supervisor Joanne Till joked: "We think he'd been practising."

She added: "We had lots on for the children and we did a grand raffle. It was a wonderful day. The sun came out towards the end, which was even better."

Monmore Green holds fun days on several Bank Holidays to benefit charities.

Yesterday's event was in aid of Macmillan cancer. In May, hundreds of pounds were raised for Wolverhampton Multi-Handicap Care at a similar fun day.
