We visit florist who hands out 100 flowers to parents as she 'brightens' up their day

Wolverhampton florist gives away 100 flowers to local playgroup.

The Happy Petal project has launched at the Small Wonders playgroup at Life Springs Church in Wolverhampton. Nichola McColl from Flowercraft gave a hundred flowers away to parents and children attending the playgroup.

She said: “We’re launching the happy petals project today. Every month, we’re going to be giving away a hundred free flowers, and we’re going to be leaving them in unexpected places whether that be a bus stop or a park bench. Whether we give them to a local coffee shop to give out with the coffees. Just ways for people to get unexpected flowers, just to try to make people smile and spread a bit of kindness.

“We used to donate a pound from every order to charity. We’ve raised thousands of pounds doing that to foodbanks.

“We just want to do something a little bit different. There’s so much bad news in the world that we just want to put something out there that’s a little bit happier.

“We’re at Life Springs Church today at the Small Wonders playgroup. I brought my children here for years, and they do such wonderful things for the children.”

One parent in attendance, Rihanne from Penn said she wasn’t expecting the flowers and it has “brightened” up her day, she said “It’s really brightened up my day. I’ve had quite a hard week. It’s nice to just come and get a flower. I think it’s a great idea, there’s so much going on in people’s lives that we don’t know is happening. You never know what something as small as a flower can do for someone’s day.”

Similarly, another parent, Paula Black from Castlecroft said, “I’ve felt so loved that I’d have an unexpected gift. I think it’s a wonderful idea and I think it’s needed in our world. You never know what anyone is going through. This is my first day back in our baby group after being in the hospital from an emergency surgery, to come to this is such a wonderful surprise.”

Nichola McColl from Flowercraft said that next month she hopes to give flowers to local nurses. Next month (May, 12) marks International Nurse’s Day and she hopes to commemorate the day handing out flowers to nurses at West Park Hospital.
