The country's second oldest branch of the real ale campaign Camra, which organises events such as Walsall Beer Festival, is on the verge of folding, it emerged today.

Just 22 people from a total membership of 490 attended Walsall Camra's annual meeting when several senior post holders announced they were standing down from the committee.

According to Camra rules the positions of chairman, secretary, treasurer and membership secretary must all be filled if the branch is to continue running.

Following last month's meeting the group is still looking for a chairman and treasurer.

It is now operating in a caretaker mode until an extraordinary general mee-ting on December 5 when the branch's long term future will be discussed.

Spokesman Mick McDevitt said: "The meeting was unable to produce a new chair or treasurer and unless these roles can be filled the branch will have to close and be incorporated into another branch area."

The Walsall branch was founded in 1972.

The December 5 meeting will be at the Tap & Spile in John Street at 8pm.

Any members interested in taking on a committee role should call Liz Read on 07799 853453.
