'Families across Dudley have faced years of rising bills': MP welcomes cut to energy cost

MP says energy price cut will provide welcome respite for constituents

A Black Country MP says the new prime minister’s decision to suspend VAT on electricity bills will provide welcome relief for her constituents.

Andy Burnham announced that VAT would be removed from domestic electricity bills from October 1, to coincide with the review of the energy cap.

The suspension will last for an initial six months, saving the average family £23, but Mr Burnham hinted that longer-term relief may be announced at the Budget in the autumn.

Sonia Kumar, MP for Dudley, said the decision would provide some welcome respite for people struggling financially.

"Families across Dudley have faced years of rising energy bills, and many are still feeling the pressure on household budgets,” she said.

“Cutting VAT on electricity bills will provide welcome relief this winter and put money back into people's pockets when they need it most.

"This is another example of a Labour Government taking practical action to help working people with the cost of living. From reducing energy bills to supporting families and investing in our public services, we're delivering real help for communities like Dudley."

Miss Kumar said the cut was on top of the £150 removed from bills at the last Budget.

By targeting electricity bills, more households will receive support with rising costs while helping to keep inflation down, she added.
