The RSPCA is trying to trace the owner of the Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog, which was found abandoned on a patch of grass in New Park Village on Sunday evening.

A passer-by came across the the male dog in Ellerton Walk, close to New Cross Hospital, at around 8pm.

RSPCA inspector Vicki Taylor went to the scene and rushed the dog to a nearby vet’s for emergency treatment.

He was found to be severely emaciated with a body score of one out of nine, one being the lowest, with all his bones visible.

The dog was found in Ellerton Walk, Wolverhampton

He was unable to walk and because of underlying health issues the vet decided the kindest thing was to put the dog down to end his suffering.

The middle-aged dog was not microchipped and the RSPCA is now appealing for information to trace his owner and for anyone who recognises him to get in touch.

Vicki said: “The poor dog looked like he was close to death when I got to the scene.

"He had clearly been neglected and you could see all his bones protruding.

"He had severe muscle wastage so was unable to walk and he was covered in urine so I suspect he has probably been left in a cage for long periods.

"I am hoping someone will recognise him so I can trace the owners or someone may have seen something suspicious on that day.

"As the dog could not walk I suspect he was carried to the area or dumped from a car."

Anyone who can help should call the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018.
