Aldi to close village supermarket for six months from this weekend

Aldi is closing its supermarket in Wollaston from this weekend to carry out expansion works to improve the store.

The store in Bridgnorth Road will be closed from the end of business on Sunday April 12 until the autumn.

“It is expected that the store will be shut for a minimum of six months,” said Wollaston councillor Andrew Tromans on Facebook.

The councillor had campaigned with residents who formed the Save The Dell Open Space group to oppose the expansion plan by the discount supermarket giant - saying it would take away much-needed open space off The Dell which is a popular play area for children.

The plan, however, was approved in September by a government planning inspector following an appeal after it was originally rejected in January 2025 by Dudley councillors who said the loss of public open space would be too great.

The inspector gave Aldi the go-ahead for an extension to add 340 square metres of retail and storage space, and to carry out landscaping and engineering works on the site.

Bosses at Aldi said the extension was vital for the business to improve the customer experience at the store and to stock a greater range of products.

Councillor Tromans said he would work with the supermarket’s representative to ensure minimal disruption to residents while the work is under way.

It’s expected that work will begin on Monday April 13.

A spokesperson for Aldi told the Express & Star the extension works form“ part of our plans to improve the store to better meet the needs of local residents” and they added: “It is expected to reopen in the autumn and customers can continue to shop at our nearby Stourbridge town centre store in the meantime.”

Some Wollaston residents said on Facebook that it would be a big inconvenience losing their local store for six months but Aldi stressed customers will still be able to “get their favourite Aldi products and prices at the Stourbridge town centre store in the meantime – which is very close”.

The alternative store is located about a mile away off New Road (the ring road) in Stourbridge.
