Driver denies deliberately running over his relative in Wolverhampton street after family dispute
A former trader is on trial accused of deliberately running over his nephew in a Wolverhampton street following a business dispute.
Kulwant Dehal denies of an offence of dangerous driving and an offence of wounding with intent relating to an incident when Gurpreet Dehal was struck and injured by a white car which mounted the pavement at speed, in Parkfield Road, Parkfield, on April 5, 2021.
The jury in the case have been shown closed circuit camera footage of the collision. The victim and his wife could be seen walking along the pavement when the car with the defendant at the wheel was captured hitting him. The victim was thrown over the bonnet due to the impact before landing on the ground. His wife is seen running to him.
Dehal, aged 51, is then seen getting out of the vehicle, approaching her and raising his left arm towards her. He then returned to his car, but remained at the scene.
Giving evidence in the witness box at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday(3) the defendant said the case had "torn apart" the family. Dehal, who ran a business in Dudley Road at the time, told the jury that that he had not gone out "looking for the" victim following their dispute over business, he had not been being abusive and had not made threats to kill him prior to the incident.
