Wolves' fans anger as train price triples for MK Dons game

Wolves fans are being hit in the pocket after train fares more than tripled for their League One trip to Milton Keynes Dons.

A social media campaign has pushed for the Buckinghamshire club to offer promotion-chasing Wolves 10,000 tickets to the away game on March 29.

The club have been given an initial 6,500 tickets to the game – with the promise of more if they sell out of their initial allocation.

Ticket prices have shot up for trains to Bletchley, the nearest station to the stadium:mk ground.

A ticket to Bletchley from Wolverhampton the week before costs just £6, with the return journey costing the same.

But on the day of the match, the tickets cost £37.20 each, although there is a return ticket that is available for £38.20.

It still means fans who wish to make their own way to the stadium will be forking out an extra £26 to get to the game.

Coach travel through the club costs £16.

Ken Gibbs, a spokesman for Virgin Trains, said the tickets for the trains were selling quickly, which explains why the prices were high.

He said: "It's quite bizarre but we increase prices when we want people to choose other ways of transport or maybe earlier trains.

"The 8.45am train and the 12.45pm train are already half booked up which is very rare with six weeks still to go until the game.

"The 11.45am train isn't full yet so there may be some cheaper tickets on there."

The price hike means that travel may even be cheaper for fans travelling from further away than Wolverhampton.

Robert Mullins, a lifelong Wolves fan from Dudley, who now lives in Manchester, said he noticed the ticket prices shot up after the #10ktoMK campaign was launched.

He said: "Me and a friend were looking at going when it was announced and the tickets from Wolverhampton were £28 and the cost from Manchester was £10.50.

"We were looking each day as we were planning it and it was slowly going up every day. I'm sure I have looked in the past and there have been tickets from Wolverhampton for about £5. "In the end, I've decided to come back to Dudley and get a mini bus with a few of my mates from football and my Dad.

"It's only costing £10 each."

Fanatical fans of the team are facing nine games in 27 days as postponements got the better of some pitches in recent weeks. That includes six away games, and fans going to every game will be shelling out at least £400 to follow their beloved Wolves next month.
