A care home in Coseley will shut on Friday in a move branded "outrageous" by a former borough mayor who helped establish it.

The closure of Wallbrook House has left 43 elderly people having to find new accommodation.

Dudley Council runs the care home and says all the residents have been relocated to a home of their choice while all 35 staff have been found new jobs.

The home will be demolished and work will start next month to build a new £4million retirement village for 70 homes and shops.

Manager Cheryl Jones believes the closure has been tough on pensioners.

She said: "The last three residents were leaving the home today The closure was always going to be difficult. It is not pleasant to have to move residents.

"I want to say hand on heart that we have done everything we can to make it as easy as possible."

Former borough mayor Jack Wilson, aged 91, who lives in Coseley said: "I think it is outrageous. That home has been a Godsend."
