A single gunshot echoing across the dark theatre forced many fans to wince in their seats in shock as the musical made an unexpected start.

But this was just a sign of things to come as the crowd were taken on a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the evening - from the startling and heart-pounding dramatic scenes to the exhilarating and upbeat dance numbers.

The show runs at The Grand until July 6

Based on the 1992 Oscar-nominated movie staring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, it follows ex-Secret Service agent-turned-bodyguard Frank Farmer who is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker.

America’s Got Talent star Jenlee Shallow took the lead role, bringing stunning powerhouse vocals and a sassy attitude to the stage as Marron.

Benoît Maréchal’s French accent slipped in now and again, but he proved well at playing the cool and collected bodyguard.

Phil Atkinson, who played the superstar’s stalker, seemed to have a little upgrade since the film but his dark and mysterious character went down a hit with female fans. Micha Richardson, who starred as Marron’s sister Nicki, also showcased her beautiful voice.

Without a doubt, this was a celebration of Whitney, with almost every scene set around one of her popular hits including So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love and I Have Nothing.

A single spotlight shined on Shallow as she doomed a floor-length gown on a raised platform for I Will Always Love You - a real stand-out moment in the show. An all-cast ensemble of I Wanna Dance With Somebody quickly followed, getting the crowd on its feet in a joyful harmony.

The staging was flawless, with striking special effects and boldly-coloured sets which constantly changed during the clever production.

As the cast took their final bows to a standing ovation, you could almost see Shallow’s heart beating out of her chest, with a sheer look of relief on her face. But she didn’t need to worry, she was most definitely the Queen of the Night.
