Olympic gold medallist James Guy opens new Stafford swimming centre
New Stafford swimming centre officially opens at Kingsmead Retail Park
Hundreds of people gathered at Kingsmead Retail Park on Saturday, June 13 to celebrate the opening of Stafford’s newest swimming centre, marking the culmination of a two-year project to bring the facility to life.

The launch event welcomed families, local dignitaries and special guests, including Olympic gold medallist James Guy, who officially opened the centre and spent time meeting young swimmers and their families.
Visitors were given the opportunity to explore the new facility, take part in family activities and watch poolside demonstrations, including artistic swimming displays and rookie lifeguard sessions designed to promote water safety awareness.

For many attending, it was a chance to experience a modern new community resource. For those involved in developing the project, however, the opening represented the conclusion of a long process of planning, design and construction.
The centre has been developed on the site of a former retail unit, transforming an empty commercial space into a purpose-built swimming facility focused on teaching children to swim in a safe and supportive environment.
The team behind the project said the motivation was driven by growing demand for swimming lessons across the UK, with many areas reporting long waiting lists and limited pool capacity. They added that the aim was to create a facility designed specifically around teaching children and families, rather than one shared between multiple competing uses.

Extensive planning work was carried out before construction began, with designers focusing on creating a warm, bright and accessible environment. The finished centre includes specialist water treatment systems, modern ventilation and family-friendly changing facilities, alongside pool space designed to support high-quality teaching.
Throughout the construction phase, the project progressed from concept drawings to a fully operational facility, with the team acknowledging the challenges involved in delivering a complex specialist build.
On opening day, more than 100 children and families attended throughout the afternoon. The event also welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress of Stafford, alongside contractors, suppliers and project partners who contributed to the development.

Organisers said feedback from visitors was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the centre as “incredible” and praising the quality of the facilities.
While Saturday marked the official opening, the team behind the project said the true measure of success would come in the months and years ahead as local children learn to swim, gain confidence in the water and develop essential life-saving skills.
They added that the centre represents a long-term investment in the community, with the potential to support thousands of young swimmers in Stafford over time.
