Dragons set to ignite Wolverhampton in spectacular art trail

Magical dragon art trail announced for Wolverhampton.

A dragon art trail will transform Wolverhampton in 2027, bringing creativity and community engagement to the city while raising funds for Compton Care.

Trail of the Dragons will run from July 5 to September 5, 2027, culminating in an auction of the sculptures. Organised by Compton Care in partnership with Wolverhampton BID and the City of Wolverhampton Council, the trail will feature 30 large dragon sculptures, each uniquely designed by artists from the Midlands and beyond and sponsored by local businesses.

The launch event took place last Thursday (May 21) at the Lockworks Cinema in the Chubb Building. Compton Care's Chair Ros Keeton and CEO Rachel Overfield unveiled the first design—a dragon inspired by Wolverhampton's character.

The sculptures will be installed across key city locations, creating a free, accessible outdoor gallery. The trail is expected to attract thousands of visitors, boosting footfall and civic pride.

Schools and community groups will participate in a learning programme, designing and decorating smaller baby dragons to feature in the trail.

Trail of the Dragons forms part of Compton Care's 45th anniversary celebration. At the end of the trail, the dragons will be auctioned, with funds supporting the charity's specialist care for patients with life-limiting conditions and their families.

The dragon symbolises the charity's mission and Wolverhampton's spirit. Its strength mirrors the resilience Compton Care supports patients to find, while its protective nature reflects the safe care provided. Dragons also represent guidance, echoing how specialist teams support people with compassion and expertise. They symbolise hope and transformation, capturing both patient journeys and the city's evolution.

Rachel Overfield, Chief Executive of Compton Care, said: "Trail of the Dragons is a powerful celebration of creativity, community and Wolverhampton's spirit. We want to bring people together, spark imagination and create lasting memories while raising vital funds for specialist palliative care."

Cherry Shine, Managing Director of Wolverhampton BID, added: "This is an exciting opportunity to bring energy and creativity into the city centre. Events like this drive footfall, boost economic activity and create a sense of occasion. Trail of the Dragons will attract visitors and give businesses a unique platform to support something meaningful."

Councillor Stephen Simkins, Leader of the City of Wolverhampton Council, said: "We are proud to support Trail of the Dragons as part of our ambition to create a vibrant and welcoming city. This trail will showcase Wolverhampton's creativity and strengthen civic pride."

Businesses are invited to participate through sponsorship opportunities, offering brand visibility and engagement platforms. This summer, artists will submit designs, while schools and community groups can join the learning programme.
